Omaha Somali-American Community Organization is suspending its operation for 45 days, due to lack of funding. We could not secure any funding for three years, and we realized that it was time for us to assess our role in the community. We are asking all the foundations that received an application from this organization to disregard those requests. We are also suspending all agreements that we entered with other organization such as The World Fellowship Church. We appreciate with all the volunteers that we have received from the community.

Gen. Mohamed A. Samater is a national father figure in Somali society. In spite of his previous role in the military government, Gen. Samater deserves our support. Today, Somalians need to forgive each other in order to move forward. Let us give the Gen. the peace of mind he needs, so he can be part of the solution in Somalia. The ex- prime minister is sharing the agony and the suffering of Somali people, and he is very concern about the difficulties that the Somali society is facing today. He can also be instrumental for national reconciliation. To all Somalian, let us defend the future of Somalia and stand-up for its dignity.

SORRY SOMALIA.
The birth of a nation does not depend on gaining independence only, but it also relate more on the process of realizing that objective. Majority of nations that retained their sovereignty through army struggle or political agitation were able to impress the European public for demanding self-determination. It was the European public opinion which forced the colonial authority to abandon their imperial ambitions, and this action paved the way for great many Africans and Asians to proclaim their freedom. In the case of Somalia, the Somali Youth League was created as a sport organization by few Italian who disapproved subjugation, and they wanted indigenous Somalian to get rid-off the evil of colonialization. These Italian expected the organization to evolve into a powerful political entity which could in steal sense of nationalism to all Somalians. However, this national dream was dashed when a misguided nomadic group compromised the secret mission, and they started to collaborate with the colonial administration in order to promote their clan interest. This tragic miscalculation gave the enemy a free hand to lead this infant nation into a path of destruction of no return. Somalia never has established a social or political infrastructure needed to deal the social upheaval it inherited from the colonial administration.

Somali intellectual and traditional leaders have thrown the nation into abyss with good intention! Somali people perceived themselves as one tribe that shares common culture. The intellectuals and traditionalist took this notion into their heart and tried to create a nation with new identity and new concept. The chieftains wanted to sacrifice the history of the society and their real composition, and this caused the chieftains to face a loud and violent opposition from large segment of the society. These clashes frustrated the chieftains, confused the serfs, and forced the nation into sleeper-slope. The chiefs with their noble intention failed to sugar-coat their idea, and they chose to bury the past at any cost. The people in Somalia are ethnically from different part of the world. Some people crossed over the ocean with the intension of establishing a gate way into Africa. Others Somali’s came into this oasis for grazing and sanctuary.

I sometimes wonder about someone saying.”I am from Somalia”. Does that mean a territory, people, or a nation? As far as I know there are no such things at this moment. Somalia has gone into coma, and it is in the hands of intensive- care unit. The chances of survival are very slim. It had sustained a very serious head injury which led her into vegetative state. There were very few people who were aware the circumstances surrounding this tragic situation, and they have not come out with the truth yet. In that case, it is difficult to comprehend someone saying,” I am Somali”. That could be the person belongs to a group of people who share common physical appearance; some people who are feuding over a large real state; or a society that divided itself into many cults and fighting for their faith

It is wonderful to have a forum for Somali issues . As a chairman , I would like to welcome all views and opinions relating to refugee experience all over the world. I also would like to see a healthy discusion about Somali situation. Now , there is at least a light at the end of the tunnel. This time , all Somalians should focus on the rebuilding of a new nation with new concept and new identity. It is a difficult task to rebuild a failed state , but it is possible with little trust , honesty , and transparency.
